As you should know, a genocide is raging in Darfur, Sudan.

Estimates say that between 200,000 - 400,000 people have been killed and over 2.5 million people have been driven from their homes. Men and boys are routinely killed and women and girls are mercilessly raped by the Janjaweed militias who are backed by the Sudanese government.

Why is this happening?

There are a myriad of factors at play here but, I would have to say that the factor that trumps all of them is money.

Darfur is an oil-rich region. This oil is highly coveted by countries like China, Russia and the United States. Perhaps this is why, despite repeated visits by Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, no real ultimatum has been given to Sudan. This could also be why the U.N. has not sent forces to help a woefully outmanned African Union force of only 7000 soldiers. You see, China, Russia and the United States sit on the U.N. security council and all have veto power.

So, it appears that, just as in the 90’s, hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of Africans will die under to most inhumane of circumstances and the world will quietly let it happen again.

But, if you want to help turn this around, SaveDarfur.org has information on how you can get into the fight to come to the aid of the people of Darfur.

We have to stand up because our government will not.
