Upon hearing this radio ad (listen below), my wife made it plain by saying, “they put this ignorant-a$$ commericial on to question our intelligence for not voting Republican?”
I could not have said it better myself. Once again, some Black Republicans, in an effort to chastise Black folks for not voting with them, play on racial politics rather than the records of the people they support. They do put out some truths but, even the truth can be misleading. For example, they cite the abyssmal record of Democrats from the late 1800’s through the 1960’s and contrast that with the Republicans of that period. You get no argument that, particulary during that time, Democrats were some of the most flaming racists there were.
But, after that the misleading statements begin.
First of all, they refer to the Dixiecrats and say that they just went on being Democrats. Then, how do you explain Dixiecrats like Strom Thurmond and Trent Lott who rose through the Republican ranks? Also, what about Nixon’s “Southern Strategy”, that invited all the Southern Democrats who were opposed to integration into the welcoming arms of the Republican party in the late 60’s?
Finally, what about the misleading statement that the Dems voted down the minimum wage law? Why is the NBRA ignoring the fact that it was because the Republicans tacked yet another huge tax cut on that same bill for their rich buddies?
Word of advice to Black Republicans like the NBRA: try appealing to the sensibilities of Black folks by showing them what you party really has to offer them. Displays such as this only lead people to believe that there must not be much substance to go with the rhetoric.
