First, let me put this out there. Generally, I don’t refer to people by the term “sellout” but, in my opinion, Ward Connerly is a sellout. I consider a sellout to have at least one of the following characteristics:
- They start out on your side but, for money, power or prestige, they switch allegiances.
- They take advantage of opportunities but, try to close the door on you when you try to do the same because it will bring them more money, power or prestige.
Ward Connerly gained fame (or infamy, depending on who you ask) for his work in the late 90’s to end affirmative action in higher education in California with the push of the Proposition 209 initiative.
Proposition 209 effectively ended affirmative action in higher education, hiring and public contracting in California.
Now, Connerly is in Michigan trying to do the same thing in that state.
The irony in all this is that Connerly, himself, used his “minority” contractor status to benefit from the types of so-called “set-aside” programs he now attacks. Thus, why I think he’s a sellout.
Connerly has only solidified his sellout status with me. In a recent statement, Connerly seems to heart the KKK for their support of his anti-affirmative action ballot initiative in Michigan. In a speech, he says the following”
“If the Ku Klux Klan thinks that equality is right, God bless them. Thank them for finally reaching the point where logic and reason are being applied instead of hate.”
Later, in a written statement, he offers the following:
“Throughout my life I have made absolutely clear my disdain for the KKK,” Connerly said in a written statement Friday. “However, like all Americans, I hope that this group will move beyond its ugly history and agree that equality before the law is the ideal. If they or any group accepts equality for all people, I will be the first to welcome them.”
Somebody, help me out here. When has the Ku Klux Klan ever advocated for the equality of all people? In fact, don’t they push for white supremacy and that non-whites and non-Protestants are inferior?
So, what type of negro aligns himself with the Klan on any issue?
The Ward Connerly kind of negro, that’s who!

[...] One of the defeats I saw in the past election was Michigan’s drastic reduction of affirmative action initiatives. This was led by the sellout, Ward Connerly (yes, I did call him a sellout) and received the official endorsement of the Ku Klux Klan (about whom Connerly said, “If the Ku Klux Klan thinks that equality is right, God bless them.”) [...]
I am working on my doctoral degree in quantitative psychology at UNC-Chapel Hill. I saw Ward Connerly for the first time in October of 2006 when he spoke in Raleigh at the Pope Center for Higher Education, a committee of illusioned, white conservative elitists who disapprove of any form of affirmative action research, factualized data, and/or free thinking.
The one thing which stood out for me was how Connerly continually emphasized the fact that he is only a “fourth white.” I don’t know- -I’m African-American and my mother is half white, yet Connerly has more “black features” than both myself and my mother. Yep, even in a previous radio broadcast, he adamantly defended his anti-affirmative action goals by professing his mixed heritage and boasting once again about being only a fourth black.
I could be way off the mark here, but it seems to me that the man hates who and what God intended him to be. Connerly vehemently wants to be accepted by whites (he somehow managed to marry a white woman back in the early 1950s), he would rather aid whites than promote any true measure of equality, and most of all, he is after money.
KKK, CCC, or any other three-lettered acronym used to label an evil and disgustingly racist regime is of no consequence to Ward Connerly. Denying his African-American heritage and making money by putting his own people through the ropes is the name of the game.
Rachel U,
You presented what I feel about him more succinctly and with more clarity than I ever could.
Thank you and all the best as you pursue your doctorate.
[...] If you have read this site for any time, you’ll know that it’s no secret that I don’t like Ward Connerly (for historic reference, see here, here and here). [...]
