Biden showing his true colors?
Let’s be real. Racism knows no political party. So, I have no probably calling out Republicans or Democrats when they cross the line.
Enter Joe Biden.
It appears that the Senator from Delaware’s bid for President has the potential of quickly going down in flames. If this happens, he should blame himself.
While fielding questions about his ‘08 Democratic rivals for President, Biden had the following to say about Barack Obama:
“I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy…I mean, that’s a storybook, man.”
The first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean? Biden actually said this like it’s a surprise to find a black person who speaks well, is intelligent and bathes regularly (okay, the last part is my being facetious. According to Biden, he meant “clean” in regards to his political record). The Right wing is having a field day with this and deservedly so. If he had been a Republican, the Left would have blown this up to epic proportions, as well.
By itself, the remark could be dismissed but, Biden has a history of saying racially insensitive remarks.
For example, back in June, Biden, when talking with an Indian-American support said “You CANNOT go to a 7-11 or a Dunkin Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent…” (video here).
Back in August, when of Fox News, the discussion turned to speculation about a Presidential run and Biden was asked how he would fare against some Southern senators. Biden answers by saying “my state was a slave state…” (video here).I presume this was his attempt to say that his state was not the prototypical Northern liberal state. But, why would coming from a slave state make him more appealing to Southern voters?
Biden has a big problem. It appears that he has not mastered what many of us in state-funded schools learned: people come in all colors and you might have to actually spend some time around people who are racially and ethnically different from yourself.
So, what we might have just seen is political Darwinism — Biden’s weakness might have killed off his presidential aspirations.
