In a follow up to a previous post (see: Old guard vs. new blood), I can announce today that the Cincinnati chapter of the NAACP now has a new president.
In a vote of 187-134, challenger Christopher Smitherman defeated the incumbent president Edith Thrower. As stated previously, this is the second vote in 4 months, as the first election was mired in controversy. A new one was called by the national NAACP and, this time, was overseen by members of the national body.
To her credit, Edith Thrower was instrumental in bringing corporation donations to the Cincinnati NAACP and is credited for bringing the 2008 NAACP convention to Cincinnati.
Smitherman plans to be more of an activist in his role as president. As a former city councilman, he was a very vocal critic of the Cincinnati police.
The Cincinnati NAACP finally has a clear winner for president and the person is Christopher Smitherman.
