In some Southern towns, interracial relations, particularly those of a sexual nature, are taboo and, in some cases, still dangerous to those involved. However, if you add to the mix that these relations involved adult white women and black minor boys, you are playing with matches near a powder keg.

Clinton, South Carolina has easily got to be one of the most blatantly-racist towns in America. After all, the town has its own Ku Klux Klan museum. So, the “punishment” these two women are receiving is no shock but, it is saddening, nonetheless.

Wendie Schweikert, 37 years old and a 10 year veteran teacher, and Allenna Ward, 24 years old and a second-year teacher (and, coincidentally, the daughter of a minister) both stand accused of having sex with multiple black boys, ranging in age from 11 to 15 years. Some of the boys were students of theirs. Both women are married.

Schweikart was arrested last year after the mother of an 11-year-old student of hers complained when her son confessed to her that he had sex with the teacher at least twice at school. However another piece of the story caught my eye (bolding mine):

Authorities said they found evidence bearing his DNA in her classroom. She is also accused of having sex with him in her car near a miniature golf course and arcade in Greenville, about 40 miles away.

If she took him 40 miles away, wouldn’t this constitute kidnapping, as well?

Ward is accused of having sex with at least 5 boys, including some who were students where she taught. In addition to having sex with them at school, it is also believed that she met them for sex at a motel, in a park and behind a restaurant.

So, some might ask, “what’s your beef? Aren’t they being punished?”. To that, I would have to say “No”.

Both are free on bail and have to wear monitoring devices.

Many Black residents of the town are outraged and ponder if the same “justice” would have been applied if it had been a black teacher sleeping with white boys. Even worse, they ponder what would have happened had it been a black male teacher sleeping with white girls.

I would have to say that racial double-standards are alive and well in Clinton, SC and show us, as black folks, just how much too many parts of America have not changed for the better.
