The Imus Apology Train’s Maiden Voyage

Posted on April 09, 2007 by JP Smith

ImusJust like Michael Richards before him, Don Imus is going on an apology tour for racist remarks. Unlike Richards, Imus’s remark weren’t leaked to the public — he said them on live radio in front of millions.

Last week, Imus, in reference to a NCAA women’s basketball game, referred to the players for Rutgers University as “nappy headed hos”. He and his producer bantered back and forth and, at one point, the producer referred to the game as the “Jiggaboos vs. the Wannabees”.

After a firestorm in which his CBS-owned radio station, WFAN, and MSNBC (which televises his radio show) expressed public “dissapointment” in his remarks and in which Imus has issued apologies over the air, the Imus Apology Train will be rolling into its next stop: Al Sharpton’s radio show. He is scheduled to appear today.

Sharpton says that his position on Imus is unchaged — he wants him fired and intends to write the FCC about the incident.

Sharpton offered the following:

“Somewhere we must draw the line in what is tolerable in mainstream media. We cannot keep going through offending us and then apologizing and then acting like it never happened. Somewhere we’ve got to stop this.”

However, I am slightly amused at the fact that, by running to Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson, people believe that they can be granted absolution for their “sins”. No offense to either but, like most black folks, I can make up my own mind just fine, thank you. If either of them grant him a pass — which doesn’t seem all that likely, in this case — he should still know that there are millions of black folks like me that would still consider him a racist.
