Stretched Too Thin?
In an exclusive, ABC News is reporting that the Pentagon is considering extending the tours of duties of ALL troops in Iraq by three months. This is all do the the “surge” that Bush called for Iraq. This means that, for active duty soldiers, their deployments go from 12 to 15 months. The supposed upside to this is that they will, indeed, get the 12 months off between deployments that they are supposed to be getting anyway.
What this also means is that this so-called “surge” will be going on until, at least, the end of 2007.
Adding 3 months to a soldiers time means three additional months’ opportunity for them to be injured, killed or suffer some irreparable psychological harm. In the end, what we are seeing is what happens when you play it by ear with war. You end up mired in a mess and expect to climb out of it on the backs of soldiers.
