The price tag for the war is…?
Today, I examined some of the human cost of the Iraq War but, let’s look at the financial cost, as well. I am not trying to cheapen the concerns of people by bringing up money, but we have to ask how that money could have been spent to better the lives of American people instead of it being used to destroy the lives of others and make it less safe in the world for us.
The McClatchy News service has been on a roll lately and they bring this bit of information to us.
Want to guess what new economic milestone we’re about to reach in Iraq? Soon, the price tag will top $500 billion. You might have seen similar analysis of this but, look at what that could have bought:
- A college education - tuition, fees, room and board at a public university - for about half of the nation’s 17 million high-school-age teenagers.
- Pre-school for every 3- and 4-year-old in the country for the next eight years.
- A year’s stay in an assisted-living facility for about half of the 35 million Americans age 65 or older.
I heard a news report recently that 26% of income taxes collected goes to pay for defense. Just imagine where we would be, as a nation, if we focused our priorities on helping people here instead of focusing on killing people abroad.
