Another Republican Jumps Ship
Let me say this first: I have some serious concerns about Pete Domenici. There’s a good chance that he was involved in the “Attorneygate” mess by possibly having something to do with the firing of New Mexico Attorney General David Iglesias. So, I don’t have a high opinion of him.
But, I think it’s interesting to note that, today, Domenici became the latest in a list of Republicans to call for a change of course in Bush’s Iraq policy. Domenici, a senior Republican, is the sixth member of his caucus to sign on to a bill asking for most of the troops to be out of Iraq by March 2008. Other Republicans on the list are:
- Lamar Alexander - Tennessee
- Robert Bennett - Utah
- Susan Collins - Maine
- Judd Gregg - New Hampshire
- John Sununu - New Hampshire
Now, of course, I don’t believe this “change of heart” has anything to do with a sudden attack of conscience. Let’s go back to something I posted a little over a week ago:
“…if you are fighting for your political life or the life of your political party and the biggest roadblock is a president of your own party, what would you do”
You see, like some others on the list, Domenici is up for reelection in 2008. So, having to deal with voters who are down on this President and the war is a sobering prospect. Therefore, the Republicans want to be seen as willing to stand against Bush and, effectively, end the war. So, Dems, get on the stick! It looks like the minority party is trying to do the job you were elected to do.
