This week, I posted about the beginning of the backlash against the satire video, “Read A Book” (by Bohmani “D’mite” Armah) from Rainbow-PUSH and how I felt that they were just missing the point. Now, I see more stupidity (yes, I said “stupidity”) coming from other circles. I just saw a clip from a recent CNN show in which they talked about this video with the creators and the host was jumping on them about the imagery. The host tried to say that what was presented was not stuff seen on TV in the afternoons. What the creators pointed out to him was that the imagery presented in their video is the same stuff being pumped on BET every afternoon. So, by turning this upside down by injecting a message about reading, good health/hygiene and parental responsibility, young people would catch on to the satire of the whole thing. In other words, younger people would “get it.”
Of course, the “afristocracy” thinks that this is not the proper way to get a point across. But, I remind people, before this video, did you know of this brother’s work? He had music and videos in the format that the afristocracy would have approved but it was not widely circulated. Therefore, he must have needed a more “in your face” message to get the word out.
At any rate, here’s a video of the CNN discussion:

I must say this video certainly got my attention. I have a 15 year old daughter, and we watchted the video together. She said she didn’t see what was wrong with it. She went on to say that the video is no different than the movie “bamboolzed”. They were both trying to relay a message to stop(blacks,african-americans,or people of color)and think about the message we are sending when we are in the public eye. Both the movie and the video are degrading. Yet we still use the “N” word, call each other bitches, believe its cool to be a pimp or a whore (as long as your getting that money). We support rappers who use those themes. But when we have a positive black man out there trying to encourage,us we don’t support him in great numbers like we do the other so called musicians!
