Hate incidents rise after election 0

Posted on November 17, 2008 by JP Smith

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, there have been more than 200 hate-related incidents across the U.S. since Barack Obama was elected president — a number unseen in modern presidential elections.

What’s being seen is everything from web postings, to cross-burnings to even murder coming from  members of hate groups.

Certain hate groups are seeing record traffic on their web sites and a large increase of inquiries into their organization by interested individuals.

The simple point is that we knew that this was coming.  Despite what some want to believe, we are not in a “post-racial America”.  I truly hope that we get there some day but, unfortunately, today is not that day.  We need to be honest enough to say that this is what we are dealing with and confront it appropriately.

In the meantime, I am keeping my antennae up, lest I be caught slippin’.

The hate that hate made 1

Posted on October 13, 2008 by JP Smith

Over the last week, we have seen things turn for the worse in regards to how the Republican candidate’s campaign chose to go beyond negative and into the gutter in its portrayal of Barack Obama as a terrorist sympathizer.

I believe that John McCain himself even had to recognize how bad it got because he had a remprimand a couple of supporters at a rally.  One women called Obama an “Arab” (I would suspect that this is how some people identify terrorists these days) and another expressed how he is fearful of an Obama presidency because he “cohorts with domestic terrorists”.

Prior to this point, you had people in McCain rallies calling Obama a terrorist and shouting things such as “kill him” and “bomb Obama”.  So, this past Friday, perhaps McCain caught a real glimpse into where his campaign is headed.

Well, I say to Senator McCain, what did you think would happen?

You can’t rile up the mob and then act surprised that they grab pitchforks and torches.  Worse yet, you can’t act as if the statements made by you and members of your campaign don’t have real-world consequences.  You didn’t create the wingnuts but you sure fed them the red meat they needed for energy.

However, there is a sort of (feigned) cognitive dissonance here.  According to the McCain people, this is just a criticism of Obama’s judgement and policy.  However, what we are really seeing is the old GOP mainstay when they are losing on issues — play on fear and, if you can, stoke racial animosity. Father-in-law gets life for murder-to-hire plot 0

Posted on June 30, 2008 by JP Smith

Chiman RaiIn a previous post, I discussed the case of Chiman Rai.  Rai stood accused of contracting the murder of his daughter-in-law, Sparkle Rai.

According to prosecutors, Chiman Rai wanted his daughter-in-law killed for no other reason than she was black and having his son married to a black woman and a biracial grandchild would ruin his family’s standing in the Indian caste system.  Sparkle Rai was murdered a month after she and Ricky married while their 7-month-old daughter cried in another room.

Last Thursday, a jury returned a guilty verdict for Chiman Rai.  Rai could have received the death penalty but, instead, was given life without the possibility of parole.

In a past career, Rai taught at the predominately-black Alcorn State University and, later, as a businessman, had several black associates.  However, these associations could not overcome the racial intolerance inside Rai and, ultimately, cost a young sister her life.

The power of hate? 1

Posted on June 17, 2008 by JP Smith

Chiman RaiIn the year 2000, Sparkle Rai, a 22-year-old wife and mother, was murdered in her home. The woman was lured to her door when two teenage girls knocked on it. When she answered, a large man burst through and stabbed her 13 times. Hours later, her husband came home to find his wife dead and their 7-month-old child unharmed.

The murder went unsolved for years but prosecutors now believe they understand the motive behind Sparkle Rai’s murder.

The break came when one of the teenagers who knocked on the door that day was later arrested on drug charges. Perhaps in exchange for lighter charges, she began talking about the murder she witnessed.

Finally, prosecutors saw a motive.

They say now that Sparkle Rai was killed because she was black. However, it wasn’t the assailant who chose her for that reason. You see, the alleged killer, Cleveland Clark, is also black. Instead, they believe that the person who wanted her dead was her father-in-law, Chiman Rai.

According to prosecutors, Rai despised the fact that his son married a black woman instead of an Indian woman and paid $10,000 to have someone arrange a contract killing on his behalf.

Chiman Rai is a form instructor at predominately-black Alcorn State University in Mississippi. He later became a hotel owner in Louisville, KY. Sparkle was an clerk at the hotel where she and Rai’s son, Ricky, met and fell in love.

The couple wed and were residing in Unionville, GA at the time of her death.

If convicted, prosecutors are asking that Chiman Rai receive the death penalty.

Is this what you get in the ‘New South’? 0

Posted on May 16, 2008 by JP Smith

MississippiThis is not to pick on Mississippi. I live in the Cincinnati, Ohio area and I can see such a thing happening here. Some city officials in Greenwood, MS are wanting a city councilman to, at least, apologize, if not resign. This stems from a racist email sent by the councilman.

City councilman John Lee, one of two white Republicans on city council, decided to show the stereotypical side attributed to many southern whites. Lee sent an email to 15 people, all of them white. The target of his scorn in the email was state sentator David Jordan. However, not being able to adequately criticize him on substance, Lee decided to resort to racism, even referring to Jordan as the “ole nigger”.

In his e-mail, Lee alleged that he “had a long talk after the city council meeting … with David Jordan. The ole nigger can’t understand why the black’s (sic) continue to shoot one another. I told him he needed to spend less time with the old people at the Voters League and more time with the young people about getting an education.”

Lee’s e-mail erroneously claims that Jordan missed an opportunity to help a “big black” who asked him for employment. In fact, according to an outraged Jordan, he had previously employed the young man during several election cycles.

The young man, Lee claimed, told Jordan that he is a rapper. “I told David he missed his chance. He should have told that black boy he should be in school getting his education in order to have a future.” Jordan said the “black boy” is a 28-year-old man.”

Needless to say, some want Lee’s head on a platter. I would imagine that a resignation will be on the way soon. The last thing Mississippi wants is press that reinforces its reputation as a racist state. That is, unless it’s still true. Hmmm…

Death for marrying a white woman? 0

Posted on April 10, 2008 by JP Smith

Interracial CoupleWhy am I not surprised this fool is from Ohio?

46-year-old David Tuason of Pepper Pike, Ohio faces federal charges over what authorities claim have been some 200 threatening letters he’s sent over the past 20 years. It appears that the targets of his threats were black men who were in relationships with white women.

One of these letters apparently targeted Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, threatening his life by castrating him, shooting him and setting him on fire.

Needless to say, Tuason is one sick puppy. I just hope that he has never acted on these sentiments.

You can read the federal indictment here.

2 get max sentences in torture case 1

Posted on March 14, 2008 by JP Smith

Karen BurtonYou might remember the horrifying story of the ordeal experienced by Megan Williams. For a week, she was imprisoned by seven racists who beat her, tortured her, stabbed her, sexually assaulted her and forced her to eat feces.

Two members of this lynch mob received the maximum sentences their charges allowed.

46-year-old Karen Burton (pictured right) and 49-year-old Frankie Brewster heard their fates yesterday. Burton, received three 2-10 year sentences for malicious assault and assault during the commission of a felony, to be served consecutively. She also received a 10-year sentence for a civil rights charge.

Brewster received a 10-25 year sentence for second-degree sexual assault.

They became the 4th and 5th people to receive sentences in this case:

Burton’s 23-year-old daughter, Alisha, and George Messer, 27, both of Chapmanville, both pleaded guilty in February to kidnapping and assault and received 10-year sentences.

A seventh defendant, Karen Burton’s son, Linnie Burton Jr., 21, was indicted on a misdemeanor battery charge.

This leaves Brewster’s son, Bobby, and another man, Danny Combs, as the only two to not tried for these crimes. Both face charges, including kidnapping and sexual assault.

Ron Paul trying to dismiss past racist associations? 0

Posted on January 09, 2008 by JP Smith

Ron PaulI remember a post I did a several months ago about Ron Paul. In it, I brought up questions about a newsletter, published under his name in the early 90’s, in which anti-black, racist vitriol was spewed. His supporters tried to dismiss it because Paul says he didn’t write it — it just appeared in a newsletter bearing his name but, he had no idea about what was being put out.

At the time, I thought this was a problem with just one issue of the newsletter so, to be fair, I could see how one issue of a printed newsletter could slip under the radar.

However, what I did not know was that this was not an isolated incident.

After scouring such obscure places as the University of Kansas and the Wisconsin Historical Society, The New Republic was able to track down some of the old newsletters and their contents are eye-opening and hard to defend, to say the least.

First of all, it’s apparent that the Ron Paul newsletter has been in existence since 1978 and has been published under many names: Ron Paul’s Freedom Report, Ron Paul Political Report, The Ron Paul Survival Report. Did you notice that they all have “Ron Paul” in the name? Wouldn’t you think that, if a newsletter is being put out with your support for many years, you might be responsible for the content. Furthermore, many of the writings don’t contain bylines so, it seems that someone wanted to express these as the opinions of Ron Paul so, did he only denounce them because of the unwanted scrutiny these writings were receiving?

Just to give you an idea of what I’m talking about, read this excerpt from the article:

Racist group sues Jena, Louisiana 0

Posted on December 19, 2007 by JP Smith

White SupremacistsIn July, 20,000 supporters of the Jena 6 descended on Jena, Lousiana. Their goal, as I understood it, was not to get the young men off the hook but, their goal was, instead, to make sure that they received equal justice under the law.

So, if you attract anyone who supports black people, you will also attract those who vehemently oppose equal rights for black people.

Enter the Nationalist Movement. This organization is now suing Jena because the town is putting stipulations on a Martin Luther King Day march they want to hold in the town. Specifically, the leadership of Jena doesn’t want the group to march with guns, wants them to change their parade route and is asking that they post a bond.

Let’s be real. The group chose that date to arouse the ire of black folks and may actually be hoping for a confrontation. We saw it here, in Cincinnati, Ohio, when the KKK would put a cross up in the city square during the Christmas season. The city council here enacted similar measures to discourage this hate group.

Furthermore, the rally in July, despite the 20,000 people there, saw no arrests or vandalism. However, with a group like the Nationalist Movement and their rhetoric, who knows what to expect?

I imagine that, in the next few weeks, we’ll hear more about this so, we’ll see if this racist group gets their demands met.

Fear of a black (and brown) country 3

Posted on November 29, 2007 by JP Smith

Pat BuchananLet’s just put it out there — Pat Buchanan is racist or, should I say “white supremacist”?

The former member of Congress, presidential candidate and frequent talk-show contributor puts on an air of congeniality and feigns sage wisdom but, if you actually pay attention to what he says and writes, it’s clear that he feels that if white men are not in charge, we are doomed.

Dr. Frances Cress Welsing, author of “The Isis Papers”, once stated that white supremacy exists “for the ultimate purpose of white genetic survival and to prevent white genetic annihilation on planet Earth - a planet upon which the vast majority of people are classified as nonwhite (black, brown, red and yellow) by white skinned people, and all of the nonwhite people are genetically dominant (in terms of skin coloration) compared to the genetic recessive white skin people.”

In other words…it’s the fear of a black planet.

Sound crazy? Well, think about the above as you read what Pat Buchanan says in his latest book, “Day of Reckoning: How Hubris, Ideology, And Greed Are Tearing America Apart”(thanks to Media Matters for the catch):

“How is America committing suicide? Every way a nation can.

The American majority is not reproducing itself. Its birthrate has been below replacement level for decades. Forty-five million of its young have been destroyed in the womb since Roe v. Wade, as Asian, African, and Latin American children come to inherit the estate the lost generation of American children never got to see.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, from 2005 to 2006, our minority population rose 2.4 million to exceed 100 million. Hispanics, 1 percent of the U.S. population in 1950, are now 14.4 percent. Since 2000, their numbers have soured 25 percent to 45 million. The U.S. Asian population grew by 24 percent since 2000, as the number of white kids of school age fell 4 percent. Half the children five and younger today are minority children.” (Pages 7-8)

In other words, he fears white genetic annihilation and is sound an alarm to white people that, if they don’t get to making babies, they are doomed. Oh, but it gets worse. Here’s another passage from the book that should make it even clearer about where Buchanan is coming from:

“Almost as many African-American males are in jail or prison as are in colleges or universities. Half of all African-American and Hispanic students drop out of high school. The other half graduates with the math and reading skills of seventh-, eighth- and ninth-graders. Yet by 2050 the number of African-Americans and Hispanics will have almost doubled from today’s 85 million, to 160 million. The future seems more ominous than it did in the hopeful days of civil rights. For these burgeoning scores of millions will not long accept second-class accommodations in the affluent society, where they are the emerging majority. The long hot summers of yesterday may be returning.”

In other words, the ignorant hordes of n*ggers and sp*cs are coming and white people will no longer be able to contain them.

It would be humourous except that, nearly every night of the week, he is on MSNBC or PBS, allowed to speak as a voice of credibility on a myriad of issues and, therefore, has an audience to which he can peddle this garbage.

I once heard a sort of joke that goes something like this — what’s the difference between a racist and a white supremacist? A racist doesn’t want to be around minorities at all. A white supremacist doesn’t mind being around minorities, as long as he’s in charge.

I guess I see to whom that joke refers.
